A North American Aerospace Defense Command fighter jet forced a civilian aircraft to leave restricted airspace near President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday. U.S. military officials described the event as a standard procedure to ensure the safety of the area. The incident happened at approximately 12:20 p.m. ET.
NORAD deployed an F-16 to intercept the civilian plane, which had entered a Temporary Flight Restriction zone. The military jet flew directly in front of the aircraft to gain the pilot's attention. This tactic, known as a headbutt maneuver, is a standard method used to establish contact with pilots who have strayed into restricted areas.
According to NORAD, the maneuver successfully established communication with the pilot. The pilot then steered the plane out of the restricted zone in compliance with flight instructions. The command noted that the pilot may face federal authorities upon landing and could be subject to enforcement action for violating the restriction.
The Federal Aviation Administration issues Temporary Flight Restrictions for events involving high-profile political figures, including the president. These restrictions are often linked to rallies or major gatherings. The FAA distributes this information through Notices to Airmen, which pilots are encouraged to monitor regularly.
President Trump was in West Palm Beach on Saturday to vote in Florida's midterm election. He cast his early ballot at a polling station alongside First Lady Melania Trump. When asked if he voted along party lines, he replied, 'Very much so.' He later traveled to Georgia for a campaign rally.
This interception follows a similar incident earlier this month over Clemson, South Carolina. NORAD reported that F-16s intercepted a plane in restricted airspace there while President Trump supported Darline Graham's Senate campaign. A comparable event occurred just days prior over Cincinnati, Ohio, where the president had also appeared.
The latest incident underscores the frequency of such interceptions during the current midterm election cycle. Military officials continue to monitor airspace around presidential appearances to maintain security protocols.
