Viktor Orban, the former prime minister of Hungary, is being positioned as a candidate for United Nations secretary-general by officials in the Trump administration.

American diplomats reportedly approached Orban to encourage him to enter the race. Orban expressed interest in the role but has not yet made a final decision. He has declined to comment on the reports.

US officials assess that Russia and China would likely support Orban, creating a rare scenario where the three major powers agree on a single nominee. State Department personnel noted that when Washington, Moscow, and Beijing align, they can typically secure the outcome at the Security Council. A US official estimated that Orban could attract support from eight of the council's 15 members, with a potential ceiling of 10 votes.

The official described the concept as initially far-fetched but argued that Orban possesses the necessary appeal. He characterized Orban as the ideal candidate for MAGA conservatives, citing the Hungarian leader's opposition to large-scale immigration and his clashes with liberal nongovernmental organizations. Orban's track record of challenging the European Union while strengthening ties with China aligns with the preferences of US, Chinese, and Russian counterparts who discussed the search for a successor to Antonio Guterres.

Orban remains hesitant due to his identity as a nationalist politician. He prefers to announce a bid only when confident of victory. A source familiar with the initiative said that President Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to back Orban if he runs. They intend to wait until after the US midterm elections to make any public announcement.

Observers note that the current field consists largely of international bureaucrats and quiet diplomats. Orban would represent a different profile, bringing the approach of a political leader accustomed to wielding power. US officials believe he has the ideological outlook and the resilience to handle opposition without being intimidated by the UN establishment. However, concerns remain that his ties to Moscow and Beijing, along with his domestic record, could lead to scrutiny regarding his independence.

Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh is one of the declared candidates who entered the race last week. She is scheduled to answer questions on Tuesday, ahead of a Security Council straw poll on Wednesday. This informal vote is designed to gauge support as members work toward a consensus. It is not yet clear if Orban's name will appear on the ballot.

Antonio Guterres's term as secretary-general ends on December 31, 2026. The positions of the United Kingdom and France, both permanent members with veto power, remain unresolved. The report suggests they might not block a candidate supported by a majority of the council and the other three permanent members.
