Lamine Yamal leads the artificial intelligence projections for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, although betting markets still favor Harry Kane. The award, which recognizes the best footballer of the 2025-26 season, will be presented at the London Palladium on Monday. The race has narrowed to a three-way contest involving the Spain winger, Kylian Mbappe, and the England captain.
Avisia, a French data analysis firm, calculated that Yamal has a 23 percent probability of winning the trophy. Kane follows as the second favorite with a 21 percent chance. Kylian Mbappe ranks third with a 19 percent probability, tying him with Rodri, the winner of the 2024 award. Lionel Messi holds the fifth spot with an 18 percent chance to secure a record-extending ninth title. Avisia stated that its model correctly identified the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele won.
Bookmakers present a different picture. They list Kane as the outright favorite, assigning him approximately a 70 percent probability of victory. This discrepancy between AI modeling and traditional betting markets has fueled debate among players and pundits in the final 24 hours before the ceremony. The split reflects differing valuations of individual performance versus team success.
Statistical leaders in the race include Mbappe, who tops the scoring charts in both La Liga and the Champions League. He recorded 25 goals in the Spanish league and 15 in the European competition. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup and set a record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Lionel Messi netted 82 in the 2011-12 campaign. Despite these numbers, neither player won a major trophy with their club or national team during the season.
Yamal's case rests on his team achievements. He won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. His personal statistics were affected by injury, but his contribution to two major victories gives him a strong advantage. Recent history indicates that winning a major tournament is often necessary to secure the award. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not lift a Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America trophy during their winning year.
Teammates and rivals have offered their support for various candidates. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone backed Messi, citing his performance at age 38. Simeone said, "After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it." Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, stating that Messi is "in a different league" despite respect for Yamal. Jude Bellingham, who is also shortlisted, endorsed Kane, describing him as a hard-working and honest person. Anthony Gordon sided with Yamal, calling his young achievements "ridiculous" and placing him on "a whole other level." Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe, noting the Frenchman had an incredible season.
Yamal is aiming to become the youngest winner in history if he claims the prize. He would surpass the record held by Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997. The 19-year-old has publicly endorsed himself for the honor, as has Mbappe. Kane has remained relatively quiet in his campaigning. The decision will be made by a panel of journalists, with the winner announced at the ceremony in London.
